Gonorrhea Symptoms & Treatment

Gonorrhea is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases. Read more about causes, symptoms and treatment.

Gonorrhea symptoms: recognize the venereal disease

Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease that causes various symptoms in both men and women . The first signs of gonorrhea usually appear in men two to six days after sexual intercourse. However, about a tenth of all men infected with gonorrhea does not notice any signs of disease at all. This percentage is even higher for women: around 50 percent of all women infected with gonorrhea do not experience any symptoms. So they often spread the infectious disease, without knowing it.

The gonorrhea symptoms arise when the mucous membrane is inflamed at the portal of entry of the bacteria. The infection can continue to rise, for example, from the genitals to the urinary tract, and from there continue to spread.

Gonorrhea symptoms in men

Typical signs of gonorrhea in men are:

  • Inflammation of the urethra, which may be manifested by redness or swelling of the urethral opening and the glans .
  • Pain when urinating
  • Massive, milky, purulent discharge .
  • If the bacteria rise through the urinary tract, the prostate, seminal vesicles, spermatic cords and epidermis can become inflamed.

Gonorrhea symptoms in the woman

In women, the infection usually happens through the cervix and cervix. Women who have been infected with gonorrhea often have the following symptoms :

  • Increased discharge that sometimes smells bad
  • urethritis
  • Pain (burning) when urinating
  • Strong, prolonged menstruation or bleeding when the uterine lining is involved
  • Purulent, bloody discharge when the gonorrhea affects the cervix

If the  infection continues to rise, the ovaries, Fallopian tubes and eventually the entire pelvis become inflamed.

Gonorrhea  in the rectum ,  or throat
Depending on the sexual practice, the gonococci in men and women can penetrate other ways in the body.

Endocrine gland (rectal gonorrhea): When gonorrhea has been transmitted during anal intercourse (often in men who have sex with men), the rectum may become inflamed. In gonorrhea, the gonorrhea can enter the intestine even after an infection of the genital and urinary organs by genital secretions. The infection in women often runs without gonorrhea symptoms . In contrast, men often experience itching, pain during bowel movements, and slimy secretions from the intestine.

Gonorrhea in the throat (pharyngeal gonorrhea): Only about five percent of gonorrhea sufferers is the throat of the sole site of infection. In patients who already have a gonorrhea of the sex and urinary tract, the throat is involved in five to 25 percent. The infection usually occurs through oral sex. Sore throat and inflammation of the throat can be the result . Most, however, feel no symptoms of a Gonorrhea .

Gonorrhea in the eye : In rare cases, an infection also affects the conjunctiva of the eye . Is known these gonococcal conjunctivitis in neonates in the womb or during birth have been infected with the bacteria. About five days after birth, they develop the symptoms of conjunctivitis . Without treatment, the disease can quickly spread to the cornea and lead to blindness. The fact that the gonorrhea affects the eye is very rare. But even in adults, this is possible if they themselves bring the gonorrhea into the eye.

Gonorrhea : treatment with antibiotics

The cause of the trippers are bacteria, more specifically gonococci (Neisseria gonorrhoeae). Therefore, the gonorrhea can be treated well with antibiotics . In the lab, doctors first test which antibiotic bacteria are most sensitive to or do not react to. How to find out which gonorrhea medicine promises the greatest effectiveness. For some gonococcal pathogens have now developed resistance to certain antibiotics. Then these drugs no longer work.

Most patients receive a combination of two different antibiotics as gonorrhea therapy , which they either take as a single tablet or injected by the doctor.

The following antibiotics against gonorrhea come into question :

Ceftriaxone as an injection into the vein or muscle plus azithromycin as a tablet - each as a single dose

Cefixime as a tablet, if the injection in muscle or vein is not possible
An alternative for sensitive patients are cefixime, ciprofloxacin, ofloxacin or azithromycin - each as a single dose in tablet form

Gonorrhea is curable

If patients receive the right treatment, the infection with gonorrhea is curable . The infectious disease has no further health consequences. However, the gonorrhea does not heal itself : If the gonorrhea remains untreated , a chronic, i-e permanent inflammation of the genitalia may develop, which may lead to infertility.

All sexual partners who had sex with the infected person within two weeks prior to the onset of the symptoms should absolutely be examined for gonorrhea. Until the antibotics treatment is finished, all patients should definitely refrain from having sex with other people. Because: If not all bacteria are killed, you can pass them on to others.

Gonorrhea: Transmission mostly through sex

Tripper is one of the sexually transmitted diseases (sexually transmitted diseases, STD). The cause of gonorrhea are gonococcal bacteria. Depending on the sexual practice, they infest the swelling skins of genital organs, urinary tract, rectum, mouth and throat after infection .

The transmission path for the gonococci is primarily unprotected intercourse without condoms with a sufferer. The gonorrhea infection occurs almost exclusively through unprotected vaginal, oral or anal intercourse. During sex, the gonorrhea pathogen reaches the mucous membranes directly.

There are other transmission paths for gonorrhea , which are less common. Thus, babies of infected mothers can become infected at birth because they come in close contact with the mucous membranes. Even a contamination with gonorrhea by kissing is not excluded, but rather unlikely. Outside the human body, gonococci can not survive long and die very quickly.
